Villa Mojito
A view of daily lifeencouraged to venture outside
Sayaka, owner of “Komichi Sou”renovated a resident located in shitamachi, theolddowntown area in Tokyo, as her new home with her Nigerian husband. At first, the planwas to open a Mojito Bar owned by her husband at the first floor entrance, butconsidering the shitamachi mind-set and concernswith the neighborhood, theydecided togive up. But to leave potential in the future, tobe able to sell bento(lunch boxes)at thefrontage, wide sliding door for the entrance and large space was secured for the doorway. As result, the resident became a homewide openwith an open-mind,integrating into arural community.Street always filled with children voices, old people going to sento(public bath) across the street to catch up on the latest gossip. Entrance is widely open sobikes and strollers can be parked, offer the ease for raising children. The interior is a one-room, eliminated corridors and can be seen all the way to the back.At the end is a bathroom where external light canenter. The glass-enclosed bathroomnot only take light into the room, but is also functional as being able to see a small babytaking a bath from the kitchen.(About Thermal insulation and Sound insulation)The situation was a tenement like house with narrow frontage, almost in contact withthe houses on both sides, not enough thermal insulation and sound insulation wascovered, resultingpeople live whileconstantlycaring for each other’s life sounds. Weused tatami mats on the wall surface as a heat insulation andsoundproofing material, andtheceiling surface was adequately insulated. Also, by installing a circulator and anupper ventilation window at theatrium located at the end of the building, we ensured acomfortable thermal environment throughout the year despite being a one-room space
