“Recovery work of Yokohama National University Natural Science Research Building”
Laboratory or rather a “nest” is a core setting in a traditional university, suitable for intensive research of specialized fields and storage for confidential valuable materials. From now on, how to utilize and develop them as open knowledge will be needed. An active mutual cooperation and dynamic intellectual exchange will become essential. Space should also sympathize and better to open up and become well-ventilated. From the 5th to 8th floors occupied mainly by labs, we established a lounge space securing inter-north ventilation, designed to foster a sense of collaboration and openness for students in different labs, where they can interact with each other under bright and open environment, also possible to secure a comfortable spot.
On the green wall composed of steel frame of 60 mm set with automatic irrigation, eight types of vine plants are planted including evergreen adsorptive type, ivy and deciduous leaves.
Expanded metal in horizontal stripe shape at the frame wall level of the steel frame and climbing auxiliary material is set on the window level. As the ivy plants grow onto the expanded metal part, the vine plants grow along the climbing auxiliary material. As a result, the entire building is lushly coated and set up as to changing its wardrobe seasonally.
